John Patrick Ettridge writes: "The problem with the current Savonius type wind turbines is the fact that the blades are only driven by the wind for approximately 120 degrees of one rotation, that is from the direction of the oncoming wind to about 120 degree from the center, the remaining 240 degrees, the blades are actually using power, and have to be driven into the wind. The solution that I came up with was to allow the normal operation for the 120 degrees of the turn, and for the remaining 240 degrees to place a shield, or skirt to cover the blades in the area that they normally would need to be driven into the oncoming wind, and by using overhead air scoops, directed the air above the rotor down into the tunnel created by the rotor and wind shield. This has the effect that the blades on the rotating turbine are driven for the full 360 degrees, greatly improving low wind speed start up efficiency, and by rotating the skirt and scoops effectively feathering the rotor in high wind speeds. The wind shield also can be moved, to ensure the wind scoops are facing the direction of the oncoming wind, either by a wind tail or mechanical means." A custom plasma lift I designed and installed to serve 5 rooms in a house. Connected to a Crestron home automation system via rs-232. The servo controlled motor for vertical axis can lift 200 lbs and hold 1800lbs. The rotation can be programmed to various speed and is precise to .5 degree. The brackets to hold the arm in place are 1/2 and 1 inch thick steel plates for extra stiffness. The rotation bearing is twice the strenght of a car wheel bearing. The beam is a 8 by 8 aluminium H-beam. Very low operation noise level.

cstart.org The lunar lander leg rotator is designed to allow the lander's legs to unfold from the stowed position into the landing position. The legs of the lander are stowed in an inverted position during the initial ascent from Earth. The legs then fold outward 70º and then rotate 180º so that they are in the landing position. Inside of the leg rotator is the leg spool, main frame, Z-axis lock plug, leg spool lock detent , #1 X-axis lock plug, #2 X-axis lock plug, and the main frame bolt. In the launch configuration, the #1 X-axis lock plug is engaged which prevents the leg rotator from rotating about the X axis (with the center of the leg spool as the origin). The lander leg is held in the vertical position by a latching mechanism. Inside of the leg spool and base plate are pretensioned springs that will unfold the leg. Prior to launch the springs are wound and the leg is cocked so that it will unfold. In order to deploy the leg one only has to release the latch that holds the leg in the vertical position. Once the leg is free to rotate about the Z axis then spring tension will rotate it 70º counterclockwise. After the leg is released it rotates 70º counterclockwise. After it has rotated 60º the cable that connects the leg to the #1 X-axis lock plug will pull the lock plug out of the base plate detent which allows the leg to rotate around the X axis.
